Ophyra

Ophyra is a genus of flies belonging to the Muscidae family within the order Diptera. These flies are widely recognized for their association with organic matter and decaying plant tissues, often playing a role as commensals in agricultural settings and food storage facilities.

As pests, Ophyra species are generally considered secondary. They do not typically attack healthy, robust plants; however, their presence becomes a concern when crops are damaged by other pests, weather events, or in post-harvest conditions where they facilitate the rapid spread of decay.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The developmental rate is highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels. Larvae are particularly attracted to high-moisture organic environments, making greenhouses with poor sanitation ideal breeding sites.

The primary harm caused by these flies involves the mechanical transmission of fungal and bacterial pathogens. By moving between rotting organic matter and harvestable crops, adults contaminate the produce, leading to increased spoilage and significant economic losses in inventory.
