Canestrini harvestman

The Canestrini harvestman (Opilio canestrinii) is an arachnid species belonging to the order Opiliones and the family Phalangiidae. Originally native to Southern Europe, this species has successfully colonized various northern regions, becoming an emerging concern in modern agriculture due to its expanding population and opportunistic feeding habits.

Although harvestmen are generally considered predators of smaller insects, Opilio canestrinii has demonstrated a shift towards plant-based diets under certain conditions. It is known to target fruit crops, berries, and vegetables, causing localized damage that can escalate if the pest population remains unchecked during the peak harvest season.

The biology of Opilio canestrinii is highly resilient. They typically overwinter in the egg stage within soil or dense debris. After hatching, the nymphs undergo several molts, gradually increasing their feeding activity as they develop into adults during the mid-to-late summer months, which often coincides with the ripening of many garden crops.

Damage to plants is primarily physical, involving the scraping or puncturing of fruit skin and tender foliage. This surface damage allows secondary pathogens, such as molds and bacteria, to infect the plant tissue, leading to rapid decay of the produce. Commercial losses occur primarily through decreased aesthetic value and shortened shelf life.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach:

• Rigorous sanitation to remove potential overwintering sites like weeds and leaf litter.
• Targeted insecticide applications if thresholds are exceeded during the ripening phase.
