Opius alloeus is a species within the order Hymenoptera and the family Braconidae. While the Braconidae family is widely known for containing many beneficial parasitoid wasps, specific species such as Opius alloeus can present challenges in agricultural environments due to their association with certain host plant tissues.
This pest predominantly targets plants belonging to the Apiaceae family. Agricultural crops such as carrots, parsnips, and celery are particularly susceptible to infestation. The pest's larvae penetrate the plant's structural components, negatively impacting the root development and overall vigor of the crop, which ultimately leads to reduced yields.
The life cycle of Opius alloeus comprises several stages, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs in the tender tissues of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding, creating tunnels that disrupt the plant's vascular system.
