The Rust-colored Opius (Opius ferrugineus) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Braconidae family. While the Braconidae family is famous for containing many beneficial parasitoid wasps, this particular species acts as a direct pest that compromises the quality and yield of various crops.
The primary hosts for this pest include cucurbit crops such as melons and watermelons. The damage is inflicted primarily by the larvae, which burrow into the developing fruit, causing internal tissue degradation. This makes the fruit commercially unviable and prone to secondary infections.
The life cycle of Opius ferrugineus consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female wasp deposits eggs into the soft tissue of young fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding, creating tunnels that facilitate the entry of pathogens. The larvae eventually pupate either inside the fruit or in the soil, depending on environmental conditions.
