Description

Systematic position. Opsius is a genus of leafhoppers belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These insects are specialized sap-feeders that have adapted to live on specific woody plant species, showing a particular preference for the genus Tamarix.

Host plants. The primary host plants for Opsius species are various types of Tamarix (salt cedar). These insects are commonly found in arid and semi-arid regions where Tamarix is planted for landscape purposes, erosion control, or in riparian restoration projects.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. They overwinter typically as eggs or adults within bark crevices or organic debris near the host plant. With the onset of spring temperatures, the cycle continues, and nymphs emerge to feed on the succulent parts of the vegetation.

Nature of damage and economic importance. Feeding by Opsius leafhoppers causes significant physiological stress to the host plants. Symptoms include the formation of chlorotic spots, localized tissue necrosis, and curling or distortion of tender new shoots.
