Description

Systematic position. The tamarisk leafhopper (Opsius tigripes) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is an insect species specifically adapted to feed on Tamarix trees and shrubs, often acting as a significant pest in arid and semi-arid environments where these plants are common.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets various species within the genus Tamarix. Due to its host specificity, the damage caused by Opsius tigripes is concentrated on these specific ornamental and ecological plantings, often affecting public landscapes, windbreaks, and erosion-control buffers.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Opsius tigripes is seasonal, with overwintering occurring in the egg stage, typically embedded within the plant tissues of stems or buds. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding. The species produces multiple generations per year, which allows populations to build up rapidly during the hot summer months, especially in dry weather conditions.

Type of damage and economic impact. Both nymphs and adults suck sap from the vascular system of the host plant. This feeding activity leads to chlorosis, stunting, distorted foliage, and early leaf drop.
