Oraesia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae, known for their unusual feeding habits. Unlike most moths that drink nectar, species in this genus possess a specialized, heavily sclerotized proboscis capable of piercing the tough skins of fruits, which classifies them as fruit-piercing moths.
Taxonomically, the genus is placed within the subfamily Calpinae. These insects have evolved a unique structural mechanism in their mouthparts, featuring small hooks and barbs, allowing them to exert pressure and penetrate the epidermis of healthy, ripening fruits in orchards and vineyards.
The economic impact of Oraesia is significant, as they primarily target soft fruits such as peaches, nectarines, citrus, grapes, and figs. When the moth punctures the skin to feed, it leaves a small, distinct hole. These wounds often lead to secondary infestations of bacteria and fungi, causing rapid fruit decay, fermentation, and premature fruit drop.
The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage usually feeds on non-crop host plants, such as those in the Menispermaceae family. Because the larvae are not found on the commercial crops they damage as adults, control strategies must be directed specifically at the nocturnal adult moths which migrate into orchards during the ripening season.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include the use of light traps to monitor and reduce adult populations, physical barriers such as fruit bagging or protective netting, and the removal of host weeds from the orchard surroundings to disrupt the breeding cycle of the larvae.
