Fruit-piercing moth

Oraesia excavata

Description

Oraesia excavata is a moth species belonging to the Erebidae family, commonly known as a type of fruit-piercing moth. Unlike many other lepidopteran pests that primarily cause damage during their larval stage, the adult stage of this species is the most problematic for agricultural production, specifically for fruit farmers.

This pest targets a wide range of fruits, including citrus, peaches, persimmons, and grapes. Because the adults feed on the sap of ripening fruits, they represent a direct threat to the marketability and yield quality of high-value crops, making them a significant concern in tropical and subtropical orchard management.

The biology of Oraesia excavata involves a complex life cycle. The larvae feed on the foliage of various plants, while the adults are nocturnal feeders. Equipped with a strong, chitinized proboscis, the adult moths can puncture the tough outer skins of fruits to extract juice, a behavior that is atypical for most moth species.

The damage caused by these moths manifests as small, localized punctures on the surface of the fruit. These punctures not only result in direct loss of sap but also serve as entry points for secondary infections, such as mold and rot-causing fungi. This leads to premature fruit drop and significant economic loss due to decay during storage or transport.

Effective management and control strategies include the following approaches:

  • Deployment of light traps to monitor and reduce adult moth populations in the orchard.
  • Application of targeted insecticides that are safe for use during the pre-harvest period.
  • Frequent removal and proper disposal of fallen, damaged fruit to break the infection cycle.
  • Implementing physical barriers, such as netting, for high-value crops to prevent adult access during the ripening phase.
