Description

Sandhoppers (genus Orchestia) belong to the order Amphipoda, family Talitridae. Unlike most crustaceans, these organisms have adapted to a semi-terrestrial lifestyle and are often found in coastal zones, damp soils, and managed greenhouse environments.

In an agricultural context, sandhoppers act as pests in greenhouses and high-moisture fields. They primarily target seedlings, young shoots of vegetables, leafy greens, and ornamental plants that remain in direct contact with wet soil or moist growing media.

The life cycle of these crustaceans is closely linked to humid environments. Females carry eggs in a brood pouch where embryonic development takes place. For successful reproduction, they require high humidity (above 80%) and a supply of decaying organic matter; however, if organic food is scarce, they readily shift to feeding on living plant tissues.

The typical damage consists of grazing on the epidermis and chewing small, irregular holes or ulcers on leaves and stems close to the soil surface. Young plants can be severely stunted or destroyed during mass infestations. Furthermore, the lesions caused by their feeding provide entry points for various secondary fungal pathogens.

Control measures primarily focus on managing the hydrothermal environment. It is crucial to maintain optimal soil moisture, avoiding waterlogging and excessive dampness. Good agricultural practices include removing plant debris, using inorganic mulch to prevent direct contact between the pest and the plant, and applying registered contact insecticides in greenhouses if threshold levels are exceeded.
