Goatsbeard fruit fly

Orellia falcata

Description

Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). The scientific name is Orellia falcata. It is a highly specialized insect associated primarily with plants within the Asteraceae family.

Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the goatsbeard (Tragopogon). While not a major pest of primary industrial crops, it can cause significant economic loss in medicinal, ornamental, or experimental seed crops of Tragopogon species.

Biology and life cycle. Orellia falcata undergoes complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults emerge and synchronize their lifecycle with the flowering of their host plants. Females insert eggs into the floral heads, where the emerging larvae begin feeding immediately.

Type of damage and harmfulness. The larvae feed internally on the developing ovaries and ovules within the flower heads. This feeding behavior prevents the formation of viable seeds. Infested heads often exhibit visible decay, premature drying, or deformation, making the seed production impossible.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is recommended to control this species. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, removing alternate weed hosts around the fields, and autumn tillage to destroy overwintering pupae in the soil are the most effective strategies. Chemical control is rarely used but may be applied if infestation levels are extremely high.
