The Amur leafhopper (Orientus amurensis) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. Originally native to East Asia, it has become an invasive species in many parts of Europe, where it poses a significant threat to orchards and nurseries by damaging valuable plant species.

This pest has a broad host range, primarily attacking members of the Rosaceae family. Its preferred hosts include apples, pears, and cherries, though it can also be found on grapevines and various ornamental trees. It is particularly dangerous in commercial fruit production due to its role as an efficient disease vector.

The life cycle of Orientus amurensis typically involves overwintering as eggs, which are deposited underneath the bark of young twigs. Following the spring hatch, the nymphs go through five instars, feeding on plant sap throughout the summer months before reaching the adult stage and repeating the cycle.

The feeding damage caused by these insects involves the extraction of sap, leading to chlorosis, leaf rolling, and premature senescence of the foliage. More importantly, the leafhopper is known to transmit phytoplasma diseases, such as apple proliferation, which can lead to severe crop yield losses and the decline of entire orchard stands.
