Argasid ticks

The genus Ornithodoros belongs to the family Argasidae, often referred to as soft ticks due to the absence of a hard dorsal shield. These parasites are primarily nocturnal and show a high degree of specialization in nesting within crevices, animal burrows, and livestock housing facilities, where they wait for their hosts to rest.

While Ornithodoros species are not classified as agricultural plant pests, they pose a significant threat to agricultural productivity in the livestock sector. They parasitize various species, including poultry, pigs, and cattle, acting as vectors for numerous pathogens that cause devastating outbreaks in rural economies.

The life cycle of these ticks is highly resistant to environmental stress. It consists of the egg stage, a larval stage, several nymphal stages, and adults. A remarkable biological trait of this genus is its extreme longevity and ability to survive for years without a blood meal, allowing populations to persist in dormant barns long after animals have been removed.

The damage caused by these ticks involves physiological depletion of the host, chronic stress, and secondary infections. More importantly, they are known vectors for diseases such as African Swine Fever and various borreliosis strains. Their presence can lead to severe losses, including reduced animal growth rates and increased veterinary costs.

Effective management and control strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. Key measures include:

• Regular application of residual acaricides on surfaces within barns and animal housing.
• Physical exclusion by sealing cracks and crevices in walls, floors, and nesting structures.
• Maintaining high standards of farm hygiene, including frequent removal of litter and waste.
• Implementation of biosecurity protocols to prevent the introduction of ticks via infested equipment or bedding materials.
