Ornithodoros capensis is a soft tick belonging to the family Argasidae and the order Parasitiformes. While primarily recognized as a parasite of seabirds and colonial nesting birds, its presence in agricultural environments poses significant challenges. As a soft tick, it lacks the dorsal scutum characteristic of ixodid ticks, which allows it to engorge rapidly and hide in narrow crevices for extended periods.

In an agricultural context, this tick is mainly problematic for poultry operations located near coastal regions or areas frequented by wild birds. It does not damage plants directly but acts as a major pest for livestock and poultry housing facilities.
