African tampan

The African tampan (Ornithodoros moubata) is a member of the soft tick family Argasidae, order Parasitiformes. While it does not directly feed on field crops, it is a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly where livestock is housed, as it affects the overall health and economic viability of agricultural production systems.

The primary damage caused by Ornithodoros moubata is not through plant destruction but through its role as a vector for various diseases. It is known for transmitting pathogens that cause severe conditions in livestock, such as African swine fever. This indirect impact on livestock leads to productivity losses, reduced weight gain, and can cause mortality within the herd, posing a major risk to farmers.

The biology of this mite is characterized by its nest-dwelling habit. They prefer dark, dry, and protected locations like cracks in walls, animal bedding, or loose soil. They are highly resilient creatures capable of surviving starvation for long periods, which allows them to persist in farm buildings even when animals are temporarily absent.

The life cycle includes stages such as egg, larva, several nymphal instars, and adults. They feed quickly on their hosts and drop off immediately after, often before they are detected. Because their feeding period is very short and occurs mostly at night or when animals are resting, infestations often go unnoticed until the mite population becomes significantly large.

Effective control strategies focus on sanitation and structural maintenance:

• Apply residual acaricides to walls, floors, and nesting areas in livestock houses.
• Seal cracks and crevices in barns to eliminate hiding spots for the ticks.
• Maintain high levels of hygiene, including regular cleaning and removal of manure and old bedding.
• Implement effective rodent control programs to prevent the introduction of new ticks.
• Regularly inspect and treat livestock with veterinarian-approved antiparasitic medications.
