Ornithodoros savignyi, commonly known as the sand tampan, is a species of tick within the Argasidae family (order Parasitiformes). While it is not a plant pest, its classification as a significant agricultural hazard arises from its devastating impact on livestock operations, particularly in arid and semi-arid environments where agriculture and animal husbandry are closely linked.

These ticks are primarily found in sandy soils, congregating in shaded areas under trees or in dusty corrals where animals rest. Unlike many other ticks, they are nest-dwellers that wait for a host to pass by. They do not feed on crops, but their presence effectively renders grazing lands and pens unusable, severely disrupting agricultural productivity.

The biology of Ornithodoros savignyi is characterized by high adaptability. The life cycle progresses through egg, larva, several nymphal stages, and adult stages. They are exceptionally hardy and capable of surviving in the soil without a blood meal for several years, which makes eradicating the pest from an infested area extremely difficult.

The damage caused by these ticks is significant. Their bites are highly painful, causing severe dermatitis, tissue necrosis, and acute stress in livestock. Furthermore, they are efficient vectors of various pathogens, leading to widespread disease outbreaks, decreased productivity in dairy and meat production, and substantial financial losses for farmers.

Effective management and control measures include:

  • Regular application of acaricides to infested soil and animal enclosures.
  • Mechanical removal or deep tilling of infested sand in livestock pens.
  • Routine veterinary monitoring and topical treatment of livestock to repel ticks.
  • Implementing rotational grazing to prevent prolonged exposure of animals to the same infested grounds.
