Ornithodoros turicata is a species of soft tick belonging to the family Argasidae, order Ixodida. While it is primarily a parasite of vertebrates, its presence in agricultural environments poses a significant risk to livestock production. Unlike hard ticks, these soft ticks lack a scutum, which facilitates their survival in narrow crevices and soil environments within farming structures.

The primary hosts of this pest include swine, cattle, and poultry. These ticks are nocturnal feeders, meaning they often attack livestock at night, which allows them to remain undetected during routine daytime farm operations. Their ability to hide in cracks, crevices, and deep litter makes them a persistent threat to animal husbandry.

The biological cycle of Ornithodoros turicata consists of egg, larva, nymph (in several instars), and adult stages. A remarkable biological feature of this tick is its extreme hardiness; nymphs and adults can survive for several months or even years without taking a blood meal. They reproduce in hidden areas, making their population difficult to eradicate once established.

The damage caused by these ticks is characterized by weight loss, reduced productivity in milk and meat yield, and severe anemia in animals. Furthermore, they are vectors for various pathogens, potentially leading to disease outbreaks within a herd. The irritation from bites causes extreme stress, which further lowers the immunological resistance of the animals.
