Tropical rat mite
Ornithonyssus bacoti
Description
The tropical rat mite (Ornithonyssus bacoti) is a parasitic mite belonging to the order Mesostigmata and the family Macronyssidae. While primarily a parasite of rodents, it is a significant nuisance in agricultural facilities, grain storage areas, and livestock farms where it can affect humans and livestock.
The mite does not feed on crops directly; however, its presence in agricultural environments is linked to rodent infestations. When rodent populations are high or when rodent hosts die or leave the area, these mites actively seek new hosts, often leading to mass infestations in warehouses and surrounding agricultural infrastructures.
The life cycle of Ornithonyssus bacoti consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The mites require a blood meal to progress through their life stages, particularly to transition to adulthood. Under warm and humid conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in as little as 10 to 14 days, leading to exponential population growth.
The economic impact of the mite is mainly associated with workplace safety and hygiene. Bites from Ornithonyssus bacoti result in skin irritation, dermatitis, and allergic responses among agricultural workers. Furthermore, they can act as vectors for various diseases, which necessitates immediate action to maintain a sanitary work environment.
Effective management strategies focus on habitat modification and chemical control. The primary methods include:
- implementing a rigorous rodent control program;
- applying acaricides in areas where rodent nests have been identified;
- cleaning and sanitizing storage facilities to remove hiding spots;
- using protective equipment for staff working in infested areas.
