Orosius leafhopper

Systematic position. Orosius lotophagorum belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. Known commonly as a type of leafhopper, this insect is characterized by its agility and specialized feeding habits, which allow it to exploit various plant hosts effectively within agricultural landscapes.

Host crops. This pest is polyphagous, showing a clear preference for Solanaceous crops, including tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes. Furthermore, it frequently thrives on various legumes and weeds that grow near farming areas, allowing the population to persist even after the primary harvest is concluded.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on phloem sap. Reproduction is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with warm and dry climates significantly accelerating the development of multiple generations throughout the growing season.

Damage and pest status. The direct damage stems from sap depletion, which causes chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted development. However, the most severe economic impact arises from the transmission of various viral and phytoplasma pathogens during feeding, which can lead to total crop failure if not managed early in the infestation cycle.
