Description
Taxonomic position: The Asian rice gall midge (Orseolia oryzae) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is considered one of the most destructive insect pests of rice in various tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
Host crops: This pest primarily infests the rice plant (Oryza sativa). While it shows a strong preference for rice, some wild species of grasses within the Poaceae family can act as alternative hosts, particularly during the off-season when primary rice crops are absent.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adult female lays eggs on the rice leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae crawl down to the growth point of the shoot. Their feeding activity induces the plant to produce a tubular gall instead of a normal leaf, which fundamentally alters the plant's development.
Damage and economic impact: The most diagnostic symptom of infestation is the production of 'onion shoots' or 'silver shoots.' These galls prevent the rice plant from producing panicles. Severe infestations lead to significant yield losses, as tillers damaged by the midge become unproductive, thereby reducing the total harvestable grain weight per field.
Control measures: Management of Orseolia oryzae requires a combination of ecological and chemical strategies:
