Plain chachalaca

The plain chachalaca (Ortalis vetula) belongs to the order Galliformes and the family Cracidae. It is a medium-sized arboreal bird native to Central and North America. While it acts as a seed disperser in natural habitats, it is considered an agricultural pest in farmlands adjacent to forested areas, where it can cause significant damage to crops.

The main crops targeted by the plain chachalaca include cereals such as corn and sorghum, as well as various vegetables and fruit-bearing trees. These birds pose a particular threat during the maturation phase, when they flock to fields to consume developing grains, soft leaves, and ripening fruits, utilizing their strong beaks to damage plant structures.

The biology of this species is characterized by high activity during daylight hours. Chachalacas live in groups, which amplifies the intensity of the damage caused to agricultural plantings. Breeding typically occurs from spring through summer, with nests built in trees. A high survival rate of offspring leads to population growth, forcing these birds to increasingly exploit agricultural landscapes in search of easily accessible food sources.

Damage patterns include the partial or total destruction of seedlings, pecking of corn kernels from ears, and the defoliation of vegetable crops. The economic impact is significant when bird density is high. Beyond direct consumption of the crop, their activity can cause stem breakage, leading to plant lodging and a reduction in the overall quality and marketability of the agricultural produce.

Protection measures against the plain chachalaca involve a combination of preventive and deterrent strategies. Agronomists recommend the following methods:
