Orthogalumna terebrantis

Orthogalumna terebrantis is a specialized species of oribatid mite belonging to the family Galumnidae. Unlike most soil-dwelling oribatids, this mite has adapted to an aquatic or semi-aquatic lifestyle, specifically interacting with floating macrophytes, most notably the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes).

From a biological standpoint, the mite is classified as a foliage-mining arthropod. Its taxonomic placement within the order Sarcoptiformes highlights its unique evolutionary niche. While native to specific regions of South America, it has been studied extensively globally as a potential biological control agent to manage invasive aquatic weeds.

The life cycle encompasses several distinct stages: egg, larva, three nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The adult mites prefer the undersides of leaves or protected crevices, where they deposit eggs. The larvae hatch and burrow into the plant tissue, creating galleries that persist throughout the mite's development, providing both nutrients and protection.

The primary damage consists of tissue necrosis and the creation of galleries within the mesophyll, which can be observed as translucent spots or streaks on the leaf blades. This feeding activity weakens the plant, reduces its buoyancy and reproductive capacity, and often serves as an entry point for secondary bacterial or fungal pathogens that exacerbate the decay.
