Description
Orthomorpha is a genus of millipedes within the order Polydesmida and the family Paradoxosomatidae. While these arthropods are generally considered detritivores, in agricultural settings—particularly in greenhouses and nursery beds—they can become opportunistic pests that threaten the health of young seedlings.
These organisms primarily target vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and young nursery stock. Their presence is highly correlated with moist soil conditions and an abundance of decomposing organic matter, which serves as both a primary food source and a protective habitat.
The biology of Orthomorpha involves a life cycle adapted to soil environments. Females deposit eggs in clusters within the soil, and larvae undergo multiple molts as they grow. They are primarily nocturnal, retreating into dark, damp crevices or deep soil layers during the heat of the day to avoid desiccation.
Damage caused by these millipedes involves the gnawing of delicate plant tissues, including stems, root systems, and succulent leaves at the soil level. This feeding pattern disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and, in severe infestations, the complete collapse of the seedlings.
Managing Orthomorpha requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is critical: removing decaying leaves and plant debris reduces the food supply. Maintaining proper soil moisture levels and ensuring adequate drainage can discourage their proliferation. When populations exceed economic thresholds, specific soil-applied insecticides may be required.
