Mirid bug (Orthops basalis)

Orthops basalis is a species of plant bug belonging to the family Miridae (order Hemiptera). These insects are commonly identified as agricultural pests that specifically target a variety of crops, particularly those within the Apiaceae family. Due to their elusive nature and small size, their presence often goes unnoticed until visible damage appears on the plants.

The host range of Orthops basalis includes essential culinary and industrial crops such as carrots, celery, parsley, and dill. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, both nymphs and adults extract plant sap from leaves, stems, and developing flower buds. This feeding behavior drains the plant of vital nutrients, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields.
