Description
Systematic position. The Common Quaker (Orthosia cerasi) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a common species found throughout European orchards and woodlands, recognized as a significant early-season pest.
Host plants. The larvae are polyphagous, feeding on a wide range of woody plants. Key targets include orchard fruit trees such as apple, pear, cherry, and plum. They are also known to feed on various broad-leaved trees like oak, birch, and lime, which act as secondary reservoirs for the population.
Biology and life cycle. The adult moths are active early in the spring, typically from March to May. Eggs are laid on the twigs or leaves of host plants. Once hatched, the larvae feed voraciously throughout the spring. By early summer, the mature larvae drop to the soil to pupate. They remain in the soil as pupae until the following spring, completing one generation per year.
Damage and pest status. The larvae are the damaging stage. They begin by consuming developing flower buds and newly emerged leaves. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which stresses the tree, reduces photosynthetic efficiency, and can compromise fruit set in commercial and home orchards.
Protection measures. Effective control involves a mix of horticultural and chemical practices:
- Cultivating the soil beneath the canopy in late summer to expose pupae to predators.
- Installing sticky bands on tree trunks during the spring to trap larvae.
- Applying selective insecticides during the bud-burst stage if threshold populations are exceeded.
- Encouraging insectivorous birds, which serve as natural predators of the larvae.
