Description
The speckled green fruitworm (Orthosia hibisci) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a significant pest in orchards and forests, known for its capacity to cause substantial economic damage to various agricultural commodities by feeding on vegetative and reproductive plant parts.
Host plants for this species are diverse, primarily affecting fruit-bearing trees such as apple, pear, peach, plum, and cherry. In addition to commercial orchard crops, the larvae are known to feed on a variety of deciduous forest trees, including oak, willow, and maple, illustrating their adaptability as generalist feeders.
The biological cycle begins with overwintering in the soil as pupae. Adult moths emerge in early spring to mate and lay eggs on the host trees. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding on swelling buds and expanding leaves, passing through several instars before descending to the soil to pupate during the early summer.
The larvae cause direct damage by boring into the buds, destroying the developing flowers and foliage. This feeding behavior often leads to the loss of fruit buds, resulting in decreased yields. In severe infestations, the larvae can cause defoliation, which stresses the tree and can lead to long-term health issues for the orchard.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling Orthosia hibisci. These include monitoring adult moth flights using pheromone traps, applying targeted insecticides during the critical bud-swelling stages, and utilizing biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis. Soil cultivation beneath the canopy can also help disrupt the pupal stage.
