Description

The Apple capsid (Orthotylus marginalis) is a species of mirid bug belonging to the order Hemiptera. While often considered a secondary pest compared to major insects, its presence in orchards can cause significant cosmetic damage to fruit crops if left unmanaged.

This insect primarily infests pome fruits, with apple and pear trees being the most common hosts. In some regions, it may also affect stone fruits. The pest prefers young, succulent growth, which makes it particularly dangerous during the early stages of the growing season.

The lifecycle of Orthotylus marginalis consists of a single generation per year. It overwinters as eggs embedded in the bark of twigs or spurs. In spring, coinciding with bud burst, nymphs hatch and begin feeding on the sap of emerging leaves and developing fruitlets.

The damage is caused by the bug's saliva, which is toxic to plant tissues. Typical symptoms include scorched or distorted leaves with small, necrotic spots. Fruit damage is characterized by deep pits, corky scabs, and irregular growth, which significantly degrades the market quality of the harvest.

Effective control measures require a combination of monitoring and targeted applications. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies include:

  • applying chemical treatments specifically at the petal-fall stage if thresholds are exceeded;
  • maintaining natural habitats for predatory insects;
  • regular orchard scouting to detect nymphs during the spring development phase.
