Systematic position: The Japanese rice fish, or Medaka (Oryzias latipes), belongs to the order Beloniformes and the family Adrianichthyidae. While primarily recognized in scientific research and the ornamental aquarium trade, this species can act as an agricultural pest in flooded rice systems where it interferes with the early stages of crop development.

Affected crops and impact: Rice (Oryza sativa) is the primary crop affected. In flooded paddies, the presence of these fish can pose a significant threat during the seedling stage. They feed on newly sown seeds and nip at the tender roots and shoots of young rice plants, leading to a reduced plant population and uneven crop establishment.

Biology and life cycle: Oryzias latipes is highly adaptable to shallow, warm, and stagnant water environments. They exhibit a rapid reproductive rate, with females spawning frequently during the warm season. The larvae and adults thrive on a diet of plankton and detritus, allowing them to sustain large populations within the confined ecosystem of a rice field.

Nature of damage: The damage is most acute immediately after sowing. By disturbing the soil surface to search for food, the fish uproot seedlings and increase water turbidity.
