Description
The black grain fly (Oscinella maura) is a member of the Diptera order and the Chloropidae family. As a significant agricultural pest, it primarily affects cereal crops, causing economic damage by inhibiting the development of the primary shoots during the early stages of plant growth.
This pest has a relatively wide range of host plants among the Poaceae family. It predominantly damages winter and spring wheat, barley, oats, and various wild grasses. The ability to survive on wild vegetation allows the population to persist and migrate into cultivated fields during the growing season.
The lifecycle of the insect consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. It is known to produce several generations annually depending on regional climate factors. Overwintering typically occurs as larvae within the stems of winter cereals or perennial grasses, which then transition to the pupal stage during early spring.
The damage is caused primarily by larvae that bore into the heart of the stem. They feed on the growing point, leading to the yellowing and necrosis of the central leaf. Such damage prevents the formation of ears and often results in the death of the main shoot, significantly reducing the density and yield of the field.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Oscinella maura. Recommended strategies include:

- thorough post-harvest soil cultivation;
- weed management, especially for wild grasses;
