Description

Systematic position: This pest belongs to the order Diptera, family Chloropidae (frit flies). It is a specialized insect that mimics the life strategy of the common frit fly but possesses unique ecological adaptations that allow it to thrive in specific cereal crop environments across various agricultural zones.

Crops affected: The species primarily attacks various small grain cereals. The highest damage is typically recorded in oat, barley, and wheat fields. Wild grasses also serve as secondary hosts, which makes it challenging to eradicate the population entirely, as these weeds provide a sanctuary for the larvae during the autumn and spring.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs on young seedlings or beneath the leaf sheaths. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the main stem to feed. The number of generations per year is strictly climate-dependent, often resulting in synchronized outbreaks coinciding with the most vulnerable phases of plant growth.

Type of damage and harmfulness: The larval stage is the most destructive. By feeding inside the central stem, the larvae destroy the plant's growing point. This leads to the characteristic "dead heart" symptom, where the central leaf wilts and turns yellow, eventually dying. Severe infestations result in significant reduction of the grain yield due to impaired tillering and reduced kernel development.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Agricultural strategies include maintaining clean fields by removing wild grasses and optimizing planting dates to avoid the peak flight periods of the adults. Chemical control is highly effective when utilizing systemic seed treatments or applying targeted insecticide sprays during the primary emergence phases of the flies.
