Description
Systematic position. The insect belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Known scientifically as Otidognathus davidis, this beetle is a specialized pest that significantly impacts the health and longevity of its host plants in various geographical zones.
Host plants. The primary victims of this pest are various palm species. The insect is well-adapted to living within the vegetative parts of these trees, making it a serious concern for landscaping, botanical gardens, and ornamental nurseries located in subtropical and tropical environments.
Biology and lifecycle. The development cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The life cycle is characterized by the internal development of larvae. By tunneling into the soft tissues of the crown or trunk, the larvae secure food and shelter, which allows the population to thrive protected from external environmental factors.
Damage and pest status. The presence of Otidognathus davidis is often detected too late. Larval activity causes physical damage to the vascular system, resulting in wilting foliage, structural weakening of the trunk, and eventual collapse of the palm.
