Otobius megnini, commonly known as the spinose ear tick, is an arthropod parasite belonging to the family Argasidae, order Ixodida. While primarily of veterinary importance rather than agricultural plant concern, it remains a significant factor in livestock management, affecting the overall health and economic output of farm animals.

This tick predominantly infests the ear canals of cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and various other mammals. It does not damage crops or plants directly; however, its presence in livestock housing requires integrated pest management strategies to prevent infestation outbreaks that can plague an entire herd and reduce animal productivity.

The life cycle of Otobius megnini is distinct because only the larval and nymphal stages are parasitic. Adult ticks do not feed and live in the environment, such as cracks and crevices in stables or barns. Larvae crawl into the host's ear canal, where they feed on fluids, molting into nymphs. These nymphs remain in the ear for an extended period, potentially causing severe distress.

The harm caused by this parasite is significant due to the physical damage within the ear canal. Infested animals exhibit extreme agitation, head-shaking, and scratching. The resulting irritation and secondary bacterial infections can lead to drooping ears, inflammation, and reduced weight gain or milk production, which negatively impacts the farmer's bottom line.

Effective control and protection measures include:

• Application of approved acaricidal treatments directly into the ear canals.
• Deep cleaning and sanitization of livestock enclosures and housing structures.
