Rice grasshopper

Systematic position. The rice grasshopper (Oxya intricata) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, where it thrives in the warm and humid climate typical of paddy fields.

Crops and damage. The pest primarily targets rice plants, but its host range also extends to various cereal crops such as maize, sugarcane, and native grasses. Both nymphs and adults consume leaf tissue, which drastically reduces the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and results in stunted growth and yield reduction.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Oxya intricata is synchronized with the irrigation cycles of rice farming. Females typically deposit egg pods in the soil or on the stems of host plants. The insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, with multiple nymphal instars that gradually increase their food consumption as they grow toward the adult stage.

Economic impact. Infestations by this grasshopper can cause severe defoliation, particularly during the early stages of crop development. When populations reach high densities, the damage can lead to total loss of leaves on affected plants, which negatively impacts the filling of the rice panicles and ultimately results in lower grain quality and quantity.

Management measures. Effective control involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Water management, such as timely flooding of fields, to disrupt the egg-laying process.
• Sanitation of field borders and irrigation channels to eliminate breeding habitats.
• Biological control through the preservation of natural predators and parasitoids.
• Targeted application of broad-spectrum or selective insecticides when pest density exceeds economic thresholds.
