Description

The rice gall midge, belonging to the genus Pachydiplosis, is a major insect pest affecting rice cultivation globally, particularly in warm, humid regions. It is classified under the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae, known for causing abnormal plant growth in its hosts.

The primary host for this pest is the rice plant (Oryza sativa). The insect specifically targets the growing points of tillers during the vegetative stage, which is crucial for achieving high yields and robust plant stand density.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs on the leaves near the ligule. Once hatched, the larvae migrate into the plant tissues, specifically towards the growing point, where they trigger the physiological changes necessary for their development.

The hallmark of a Pachydiplosis infestation is the formation of a silver-white tubular structure, often referred to as a "gall" or "onion shoot." This abnormal growth replaces the leaf blade and prevents the formation of the panicle. Plants infested early in the season often compensate by producing excessive tillers, but these are rarely productive, leading to significant yield loss.

Effective management strategies include the planting of resistant or tolerant rice varieties, which is the most sustainable approach. Furthermore, early detection through regular field scouting is essential.
