Spruce gall aphid

Pachypappa marsupialis is a specialized insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. In the context of arboriculture and forestry, it is recognized as a significant pest of spruce trees, known for its ability to induce abnormal tissue growth in its host plant.

The host range of this aphid is primarily limited to various species within the Picea genus. The insects prefer young, actively growing shoots, which are most vulnerable to feeding damage. This pest is particularly problematic in nurseries and young plantations where the health of the leading shoot is critical for the future development and symmetry of the tree.

The biology of Pachypappa marsupialis is marked by a complex life cycle characterized by the formation of galls. Early in the spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding on developing spruce needles and buds. The biochemical substances injected during feeding cause the plant to form protective pouch-like galls, within which the aphids live and mature safely from external predators and environmental conditions.

Damage caused by this pest is easily identified by the presence of deformed, gall-like structures on the branches. These galls interfere with the normal vascular transport of nutrients in the shoot. As a consequence, the affected parts of the tree show signs of stunted growth, twisting, and premature needle chlorosis, which can significantly degrade the aesthetic appearance and structural integrity of the tree.
