Poplar-spruce gall aphid

Pachypappa tremulae is a specialized aphid species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is recognized as a significant pest that follows a complex, heteroecious life cycle, meaning it requires two different host plants to complete its development during the year.

The primary host plants for this species are members of the Populus genus, such as the aspen (Populus tremula), while the secondary host is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). This dual-host system allows the pest to exploit different ecological niches throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by Pachypappa tremulae on poplars manifests as the formation of distinct, blister-like galls on the leaves. These galls provide shelter and food for the aphid colonies, leading to leaf deformation, yellowing, and premature senescence. On spruces, the aphids feed on the roots, which can cause significant stress, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or environmental stressors.

The life cycle involves seasonal migration. In the spring, stem mothers hatch on aspen and initiate gall formation on new leaves. As the season progresses, winged forms develop and migrate to the root systems of nearby spruce trees. In late summer or autumn, a return migration to the aspen occurs to deposit overwintering eggs on the bark.
