The genus Palaemonetes, belonging to the family Palaemonidae and the order Decapoda, consists of small aquatic crustaceans. While often considered beneficial in natural ecosystems, they can act as pests in controlled agricultural settings, particularly in rice cultivation or integrated aquaculture-hydroponic systems.

These organisms primarily damage aquatic vegetation, specifically targeting rice seedlings and young hydrophytes. In environments where they are overpopulated, they feed on the delicate roots and leaves, significantly reducing the yield potential of young crops during the early stages of growth.

The biological cycle of these crustaceans includes a series of larval stages that are highly sensitive to water chemistry and temperature. Reproduction occurs rapidly in warm, nutrient-rich water, allowing the population to explode within a single growing season if not properly managed through water regulation and environmental control.

The nature of the damage involves the physical consumption of plant tissues, leading to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic capability, and in severe cases, the destruction of the entire seedling crop. Their pest status is significant because they can compromise the establishment phase of submerged crops, making re-sowing necessary.

To control populations, integrated management strategies are required. Techniques include mechanical filtration at water inlets, the timing of water drainage to disrupt life cycles, and the use of targeted biological controls that manage crustacean numbers without negatively affecting the target crops or the surrounding aquatic environment.
