Description
The large pine weevil (taxonomically associated with the genus Hylobius, often indexed as Hylobius abietis under the older Pales classification) is a destructive pest of coniferous forests. It belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, ranking among the most economically significant insects in European forestry.
This pest predominantly targets young conifer seedlings, particularly pine, spruce, larch, and fir. It is especially problematic in reforestation areas or clear-cut sites where fresh stumps remain, providing an ideal breeding ground for the next generation of weevils.
The life cycle is complex, often lasting between one and three years depending on environmental temperatures. Adult females lay eggs in the roots or root collars of stressed or felled trees. Larvae develop beneath the bark, feeding on the inner bark (phloem), and pupate in the wood before emerging as adults to feed on seedlings.
The damage caused by adult weevils is characterized by the consumption of the thin bark on young stems. When feeding is extensive, it can lead to circular girdling of the stem. This disrupts the tree's vascular system, eventually causing the seedling to wilt and die, which can lead to near-total loss of young forest plantations.
Control strategies emphasize silvicultural practices aimed at reducing the available breeding habitat. These include the removal of stumps, delaying replanting until the population naturally declines, and cleaning clear-cut areas of slash. Furthermore, chemical protection of seedlings using insecticidal dips or coatings is a critical measure to ensure survival during the most susceptible early years.
