Palingenia

Palingenia is a genus of mayflies belonging to the order Ephemeroptera and the family Palingeniidae. It is crucial for agronomists and farmers to note that Palingenia species are not plant pests; they are strictly aquatic insects that spend the vast majority of their life cycle in riverbeds and are harmless to terrestrial crops.

The systematic position of this genus highlights its adaptation to specific aquatic environments. Their larvae are specialized burrowers that construct complex tunnels in clay or silt river bottoms. This sedentary lifestyle makes them highly sensitive to changes in water quality and sediment composition, often serving as indicators of healthy freshwater ecosystems.
