Paludicella
Paludicella articulata
Description
Paludicella (Paludicella articulata) is a freshwater bryozoan belonging to the order Ctenostomata and the family Paludicellidae. While it does not feed on crops, it acts as a significant industrial and agricultural pest by causing extensive biofouling in irrigation pipelines, pumping stations, and filtration systems. Its ability to thrive in man-made water structures makes it a target for agricultural maintenance programs.
The biology of Paludicella articulata involves the formation of colonial structures composed of interconnected zooids. These colonies develop on submerged surfaces, preferring sites with moderate current and adequate nutrient flow. In agricultural settings, they easily attach to the interior of PVC and metal pipes used in irrigation, effectively turning the entire water distribution system into a suitable habitat for their growth.
Its life cycle includes a resilient dormant stage known as hibernacula. These structures are resistant to environmental stressors, such as dehydration or cold temperatures, allowing the species to persist in irrigation systems even during the off-season. Once favorable conditions return, these hibernacula activate, leading to rapid re-colonization of the system, which complicates long-term eradication efforts.
The damage caused by this organism is primarily mechanical. Rapid colony expansion leads to significant pipe constriction, increased friction loss, and reduced water pressure. In automated irrigation systems, this can cause pump motor burnout and failure of precision nozzles. Furthermore, decaying colonies can release organic particles, leading to frequent clogging of drip irrigation emitters, which disrupts water and nutrient delivery to the crops.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures include the installation of fine-mesh filters at water intakes to trap larvae. For existing infestations, mechanical scrubbing combined with chemical treatment using approved biocide agents is often necessary. Regular system flushing and the application of non-toxic, anti-fouling interior pipe coatings have proven effective in reducing the frequency of colonial attachment.
