Pine beauty moth

The pine beauty moth (lat. Panolis flammea) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a highly significant defoliator, known primarily for causing severe outbreaks in pine forests across Europe, leading to large-scale forest degradation if left unmanaged.

The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). During severe population outbreaks, larvae can cause extensive defoliation, stripping entire stands of their needles. While primarily a pine specialist, in some ecological conditions, it may also impact other conifer species found within proximity to heavily infested stands.

The moth completes one generation per year. Adult emergence typically occurs in early spring, coinciding with the flushing of pine shoots. Females deposit eggs in rows on needles. Larvae hatch and pass through several instars, feeding voraciously on the canopy foliage before descending to the forest floor to pupate in the soil for the winter.

Larval feeding causes distinct damage symptoms. Early instars typically cause "notching" or skeletonization of the needles, while later stages consume the entire needle down to the sheath. This severe defoliation reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, leading to significant loss of annual wood increment and high mortality rates if the infestation persists.

Effective management strategies for the pine beauty moth include:

• Regular monitoring of pupal density in the forest litter to predict population outbreaks.
• Use of pheromone traps to track adult flight periods and population dynamics.
• Application of biological pesticides or selective insecticides during the early larval stages for maximum efficacy.
• Silvicultural practices, such as promoting mixed forest stands to enhance natural resistance against mass outbreaks.
