The Pine panthea (Panthea coenobita) is a moth belonging to the Noctuidae family. This species is widely recognized as a pest of coniferous forests, where its larvae feed on the needles of various tree species, potentially causing widespread defoliation if left unmanaged.
The primary host plants for this pest include Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), as well as various spruce and larch species. The presence of the caterpillars is often noted by the thinning of the canopy and the accumulation of needle remnants on the forest floor, which indicates active feeding by the larval population.
The biology of the Pine panthea typically involves a single generation per year. Adult moths emerge in early summer to mate and lay eggs on host needles. The resulting caterpillars feed throughout the summer months, growing through several larval stages before pupating in protected areas such as bark crevices or under forest litter for the winter.
