Systematic position: The peony burnet moth (lat. Paonia variegata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Zygaenidae. This species is specifically adapted to feed on the tissues of plants within the Paeonia genus, making it a specialized pest that impacts peony plantations in specific geographic regions.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this insect are various species of herbaceous and tree peonies. The moth demonstrates a clear preference for cultivars with large, nutrient-rich buds and succulent leaves, as these provide the essential resources needed for the larval development stages.

Biology and life cycle: Adult moths are characterized by their distinctively bright wing patterns, which serve as an aposematic signal to predators. Females lay eggs on the undersides of peony leaves in early summer. After hatching, the larvae undergo several instar stages, feeding aggressively during the warm months before pupating in the soil or among organic debris to overwinter.
