Description
The genus Papaipema belongs to the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are widely recognized as stem-boring pests. The most significant species in this group, particularly for North American agriculture, is the common stalk borer (Papaipema nebris), which exhibits a characteristic tunneling behavior inside plant stalks.
The range of host plants for Papaipema species is extensive. They commonly infest corn (maize), soybeans, potatoes, tomatoes, and various herbaceous ornamentals. By utilizing weeds like ragweed or giant foxtail as primary nurseries, the larvae successfully transition to adjacent crop fields once they have reached a sufficient size to penetrate sturdier stalks.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, typically deposited on grasses and weed debris. Hatching occurs in early spring, and the young larvae begin their life cycle by mining the stems of grasses or small weeds before migrating to larger host plants as they develop through several instars.
Damage symptoms are distinctive and often appear as a withered central leaf, known as "dead heart." As the larva bores into the center of the stem, it destroys the growing point of the plant. This structural damage prevents normal development, stunts growth, and makes the stems highly susceptible to lodging during windy conditions, leading to substantial yield losses.
Management relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Cultural practices are the most effective, focusing on the destruction of border-area weeds and grasses that serve as egg-laying sites. Proper tillage helps bury overwintering eggs. Chemical control is challenging because larvae are protected inside the stem; therefore, scouting is essential to apply insecticides only during the short window when larvae are actively migrating between plants.
