Papaipema leucostigma

Systematic position. Papaipema leucostigma belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is recognized as a specific stem-boring pest that primarily targets herbaceous plants. Because the larvae live inside the plant tissues, they are protected from many external environmental factors and common contact pesticides.

Host plants. The pest affects a variety of herbaceous species, with a particular affinity for members of the Asteraceae family and several ornamental perennials. It is frequently observed causing damage to garden flowers and various wild plants that serve as host reservoirs, facilitating the spread of the insect to nearby agricultural and ornamental crops.

Biology and life cycle. The species typically follows a univoltine life cycle, meaning one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, deposited on plant debris or near the base of host plants. Upon hatching in the spring, the larvae immediately seek out a suitable stem to bore into, where they remain throughout their development, consuming the pith of the host plant.

Damage patterns and economic importance. The larvae tunnel through the internal stem tissue, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients. As a result, the upper part of the plant starts to wilt, turn yellow, and eventually die. These structural damages weaken the plant significantly, making it susceptible to pathogens and often rendering ornamental flowers unsalable or causing total crop failure.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to minimize damage caused by this moth. Key control strategies include:

• Sanitation practices: removing and destroying crop residues and weeds after the growing season to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Monitoring: identifying early signs of infestation, such as small entry holes or frass at the stem base.
• Manual removal: cutting out and disposing of infested stems before the larvae complete their development.
• Chemical control: using systemic insecticides applied during the critical window when larvae are exposed before boring into the stems.
