Description

Systematic position: Papaipema nebris belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae. It is a notorious stem-boring pest known for its cryptic behavior, which allows the larva to cause significant damage to the interior of host plant stems without being immediately visible.

Host crops: The pest is particularly destructive to maize (corn), but it also attacks a wide variety of other plants, including tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and wheat. It frequently utilizes common weeds, such as ragweed and giant foxtail, as primary hosts before migrating to cultivated crops.

Biology and life cycle: This species completes one generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs laid on plant debris or grasses. Upon hatching in spring, the larvae feed initially on smaller stems or weeds before moving into the sturdier stems of crops as they increase in size.

Nature of damage: Larvae bore into the center of the stem, often killing the growing point. Typical signs include the "dead heart" symptom, where the youngest leaves wilt while the outer leaves remain green. This tunneling weakens the stalk, causing stunted growth, lodging, and significant yield losses at harvest time.
