Description

The glaucous moth (lat. Papestra biren) is an insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a widely distributed species found primarily in forest and forest-steppe zones, capable of thriving in various environmental conditions across the northern hemisphere.

This species is a known polyphagous pest. Its larvae, or caterpillars, cause damage to a diverse range of crops, including vegetables, berries, and shrubs. Economic impact is often observed on cabbage fields, lettuce crops, and various berry plantations, such as blueberries and bilberries, where caterpillars consume the foliage.

The biological cycle of this moth typically includes one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the pupal stage within the soil. Adult moths emerge in late spring or early summer. Females lay eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. Caterpillar development occurs throughout the summer months before they burrow into the soil to pupate.

The damage caused by the larvae ranges from skeletonizing to complete defoliation of the leaves. High populations of the glaucous moth can significantly reduce the photosynthetic area of the plants, leading to stunted growth, reduced plant vigor, and significant yield losses in both quantity and quality.
