Papilio andraemon belongs to the family Papilionidae, in the order Lepidoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant pest affecting plants within the Rutaceae family, specifically targeting various types of citrus. Its natural distribution is primarily centered in the Caribbean region, where it poses a constant threat to lime, lemon, and orange plantations.

The biology of this species follows the typical life cycle of swallowtail butterflies. Adult females lay eggs on the tender foliage of host plants. Once hatched, the larvae undergo several instar stages, feeding aggressively on the plant tissues. As development is highly dependent on ambient temperatures, multiple generations can emerge within a single year in tropical climates.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage. Caterpillars possess voracious appetites, often stripping leaves down to the midrib, a process known as skeletonization. Severe infestations result in reduced photosynthetic capacity, weakened plant vigor, and significant losses in both the quality and quantity of the citrus fruit harvest.

Identification of the pest is straightforward through visual field assessment. Signs include irregularly shaped bite marks on the margins of young leaves and the presence of frass on the stems. During outbreaks, the population density can spike rapidly, causing substantial economic loss in citrus nurseries and commercial orchards if left unmanaged.

Management and control strategies include a multi-faceted approach:

• Frequent monitoring of the undersides of leaves to detect and remove egg clusters.
• Hand-picking larvae in small-scale home gardens to prevent population spikes.
• Application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis for eco-friendly control.
• Strategic use of systemic or contact insecticides during peak larval activity to protect new growth.
