Citrus swallowtail

The citrus swallowtail (Papilio demodocus) is a butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Papilionidae. While recognized for its beauty in its adult form, it is considered a significant agricultural pest, particularly within its native range in Africa, where it poses a constant threat to commercial citrus cultivation.

The larvae of this species feed primarily on plants within the Rutaceae family. Major hosts include various citrus species such as lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit trees. Occasionally, the larvae may also be found feeding on other related plants, causing damage to both orchard trees and nursery stock.

The life cycle of Papilio demodocus involves distinct developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid singly on the leaves, hatching into caterpillars that go through several instar stages. The pupal stage is characterized by high camouflage capabilities, allowing the insect to blend into the twigs and bark of the host tree.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which consumes large quantities of foliage. Early-stage larvae often consume leaf edges, while larger caterpillars can strip a branch of all its leaves, leaving only the main veins. This defoliation reduces the tree's vigor, delays fruit development, and may cause severe stress to young trees.

Control measures are essential for maintaining orchard health. Mechanical control, such as hand-picking caterpillars from smaller trees, is highly effective. In larger operations, the use of biological control agents and targeted insecticides is recommended to manage populations without disrupting the ecosystem or harming beneficial pollinators.
