Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio glaucus
Description
The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Papilionidae. While primarily appreciated for its beauty as an adult butterfly, its larval stage can act as a pest on various deciduous trees and horticultural crops. Understanding its life cycle is essential for gardeners to manage potential infestations effectively.
This pest targets a wide range of host plants, particularly within the Rosaceae family. Fruit trees such as apples, cherries, plums, and pears are frequently affected. Beyond orchard fruits, the larvae are known to feed on species like birch, ash, and tulip trees, meaning that surrounding vegetation can serve as a reservoir for the pest population in home gardens.
The biology of Papilio glaucus involves a complete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid singly on leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo five instars. Early instars resemble bird droppings to deter predators, while later stages appear bright green with large, eye-like markings on the thorax. These visual defenses allow the larvae to survive while feeding openly on the host plant.
The damage is caused by the voracious feeding of the caterpillars. They consume leaf tissue, often leading to heavy defoliation if the population density is high. This loss of foliage reduces the tree's ability to perform photosynthesis, ultimately weakening the plant's health, impacting fruit development, and making the tree more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.
Integrated pest management is the most effective approach for control. In small orchards, manual removal of caterpillars is highly successful due to their size and visibility. If an infestation is widespread, applying biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis is recommended to minimize impact on non-target species. Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and pruning also aids in recovery from minor damage.
