The Citrus swallowtail (Papilio nireus) is a butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Papilionidae. While many swallowtails are appreciated for their beauty, Papilio nireus acts as a notable agricultural pest in its larval stage, particularly within African citrus-growing regions.

The primary hosts for this insect are plants from the family Rutaceae. It specifically targets citrus crops, including orange, lime, and lemon trees. The larvae (caterpillars) are highly attracted to the tender, young leaves of these hosts, which serve as their main food source during development.

The biological development follows a complete metamorphosis cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the leaves of host trees.
